How Long to Stay in a Sauna, and How Many Rounds

There is no single right number. Most people settle into rounds of about 5 to 15 minutes, two to four times a session, with a proper cooldown between each. Here is how to find yours.

A typical round

In a traditional Finnish-style sauna at about 70–100 °C (160–210 °F), a round of 5 to 15 minutes is common. Many regulars stay 10–15 minutes; newcomers often start at 5–8. The upper bench is noticeably hotter than the lower one, and throwing water on the stones (löyly) makes the room feel hotter still, so the same clock time can feel very different.

Treat the timer as a check-in, not a target. Leave when you've had enough, even if the round isn't up.

How many rounds

Two to four rounds is the usual range for a session. One round is perfectly fine. More rounds aren't better by default; they're just longer evenings.

Cooling down between rounds

Step out and cool off for at least as long as you were in, often longer: a cool shower, a cold plunge, a lake, or simply sitting outside. Then rest until your breathing and heart rate have settled before going back in. Drink water between rounds.

A first-session plan

  1. Rinse off, then sit on a lower bench for 5–8 minutes.
  2. Cool down for 5–10 minutes: shower or fresh air, then sit and rest.
  3. If you feel good, do a second round of similar length, higher up if you like.
  4. Stop there for the first time. Note how you felt, and adjust next time.

Signs it's time to get out

Avoid alcohol before and during a sauna, don't go in dehydrated, and stand up slowly when you leave the bench.

How Sauna Rounds helps

Set a target length for each round and cooldown, and Sauna Rounds counts them for you, with alerts when a target is reached. You can pause or change a target without losing your elapsed time, and every session lands in your journal so you can see what actually works for you.

Sauna Rounds plans your heat-up, times every round, cooldown and plunge, and keeps a journal of your sessions. Free, in your browser.
